Heritage Guild

Guilds were passe by the 19th Century, but in order to preserve our pioneer past, we must exhibit and provide the agricultural and industrial skills and trades of our forebears, so we have formed the Heritage Guild, a group that hopes to keep these "arts" alive here in the West.

The Heritage Guild at the Academy are yeoman farmers, tradesmen, masters, journeymen and apprentices working with horses or oxen; woods or metals; cloth or cordage; stones or bricks; ceramics or glass; leather or paper; and the many other animal, mineral or element found yesterday and today.  If you are a teamster, smith, spinner, weaver, cooper, dyer, wainwright, chandler, or are interested in becoming one, we welcome your participation.

We offer a folk center environment for all ages to try their hands at the various pioneer skills and trades that were essential to settlements all across the West.  While many living history farms on our East Coast demonstrate these skills and trades on a daily basis, there are precious few here in the West.  Help us to remedy the disparity.

Considering the economy today, these skills and trades may not be just show and performance, but the substance of a niche economy wherein olde tyme products can be bought and sold as well as skills taught for future generations.   Draft Horse Ground Driving and Blacksmithing are our anchor trades, but we are also developing the other skills and trades.  Workshops and classes are offered on a one-on-one or group basis.

Classes and Workshops are now available in the following trades:
Ironsmithing
Gunsmithing
Leatherworking
Pottery
Horse-Drawn Ground Driving
